Open schedules from OneDrive and SharePoint
A Microsoft Project (.mpp) or Primavera P6 (.xer) file in OneDrive for
Business or a SharePoint document library can open straight into Onplana. In
the file’s Open menu, choose Open in Onplana: Onplana reads the file
once, imports it as a new project and opens its Gantt. Nothing to install.
It works on every Onplana plan, including Free.
Who does what
Section titled “Who does what”| Who | What | How often |
|---|---|---|
| A Microsoft 365 administrator | Approves the app Onplana for OneDrive and SharePoint for the organization. | Once per tenant |
| Anyone with an Onplana account | Opens a file from the Open menu. | Each file |
For the administrator, once per tenant
Section titled “For the administrator, once per tenant”Microsoft’s default consent settings do not let people approve an app that reads files on their own, so an administrator approves it once for everyone.
-
Grant admin consent. A Global Administrator, Application Administrator or Cloud Application Administrator opens this link and accepts:
Grant consent to Onplana for OneDrive and SharePoint
Microsoft shows the app’s publisher as DevSoft Solutions, LLC, verified, with the domain onplana.com, then returns you to an Onplana page that says whether consent was granted.
-
Wait for the menu item. Microsoft can take 24 to 48 hours to show Open in Onplana in your tenant’s Open menus after the approval. Nothing else is needed.
What you are approving, in plain words
Section titled “What you are approving, in plain words”| Permission | What it allows | What it does not allow |
|---|---|---|
openid, profile |
Signing the person in, and reading their own name and email address. | Reading anyone else’s profile. |
Files.Read.All (delegated) |
Reading a file the signed-in person can already open, when that person chooses Open in Onplana on it. | Writing, moving or deleting any file. Reading a file the person cannot open. Anything with nobody signed in: the app has no application permissions. |
Onplana reads the one file the person chose, once, and keeps a copy only for the few minutes the import takes. The project it creates lives in Onplana; the file stays in OneDrive or SharePoint as it was.
This is a separate app from Onplana’s sign-in app and from Onplana Projects for SharePoint. Approving one approves nothing for the others.
Open a file
Section titled “Open a file”-
In OneDrive or a SharePoint library, select one
.mppor.xerfile. -
Choose Open, then Open in Onplana. A new tab opens.
-
Sign in with Microsoft if asked. Microsoft already knows who you are, so there is no account to pick.
-
Sign in to Onplana with the same email address, if you are not signed in already. Onplana imports the plan, as the Import wizard does, and opens its Gantt.
If your Free workspace already has as many projects as the plan allows, Onplana offers the trial, as it does in the Import wizard.
What it does not do
Section titled “What it does not do”- Other file types. Only
.mppand.xershow the menu item. For a Microsoft Project XML file or a spreadsheet, use the import in Onplana. - Personal OneDrive. Microsoft offers the Open menu to apps only in OneDrive for Business and SharePoint.
- Several files at once. Select one file.
- Files over 50 MB. The most Onplana imports.
- Changing the file. Onplana never writes back. Later changes to the file do not reach the Onplana project.
Messages and what to do
Section titled “Messages and what to do”| What Onplana says | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Opening files from OneDrive and SharePoint is not turned on yet. | Onplana has not turned the feature on. | Import the file in Onplana instead. |
| Your organization has not approved Onplana to read files yet. | Admin consent is not done, or you declined Microsoft’s prompt. | Send your administrator this page. See For the administrator. |
| Onplana can open one file at a time. | More than one item was selected. | Select a single file. |
| Onplana opens Microsoft Project (.mpp) and Primavera P6 (.xer) files. | The file is another type, or a folder. | Use the import in Onplana. |
| This link has expired. | Sign-in took more than 10 minutes, the file waited more than 15, or the link was used already. | Open the file again from OneDrive or SharePoint. |
| Signing in with Microsoft did not finish. | The Microsoft sign-in was cancelled or failed. | Open the file again. |
| This file is larger than 50 MB. | Over the import limit. | Split the plan, or import a smaller export. |
| Onplana could not read this file. | Microsoft refused: you cannot open it, it was deleted, or the service was busy. | Check you can open it in OneDrive or SharePoint, then try again. |
| Onplana could not open the file just now. | A passing problem on Onplana’s side. | Try again in a few minutes, or import it in Onplana. |
Remove it
Section titled “Remove it”In Microsoft Entra ID, delete the enterprise application Onplana for OneDrive and SharePoint. The menu item can take up to 48 hours to disappear. Projects already imported stay in Onplana, and no file is touched.
Does Onplana get access to all our files? No. The permission is delegated: Onplana reads only a file the signed-in person chose and could already open, at the moment they choose it. With no person signed in, it reads nothing.
Does it cost extra? No. It works on every plan, including Free.
Does it work in Teams? In a channel’s files opened in SharePoint, yes. Inside the Teams client’s own Files view it depends on Microsoft showing the Open menu there.
