Move a project to a new start date

All plansProject owner or manager

The kick-off slipped by a month, or you are reusing last year’s plan for this year. Move project… moves the whole plan to a new start date in one step: every task shifts by the same number of working days, and durations, links and lags stay as they are.

  1. Open the project, open the ⋯ menu in the project header, point at Manage project, and select Move project….

  2. Under New project start, pick the date. The dialog shows when the project starts now, and counts what will happen before anything changes: how many tasks move, and how many stay where they are.

  3. Tick Move deadlines too if the deadlines should travel with the plan. Leave it clear to keep them on their dates.

  4. Select Move project. The dialog then says where the project starts now, how many tasks moved, how many stayed, and how many tasks linked after them were rescheduled.

To put everything back, select Undo in the same dialog before you close it. Undo moves the plan back to its old start with the same deadline choice, so every task that moved returns to its dates. After the dialog is closed, you can still go back to the moment before the move with Restore a schedule to an earlier moment.

  • The distance is counted in working days on the project’s working calendar, from the old project start to the new one. A task keeps its place in the working week, so nothing lands on a weekend or a holiday. See Configure working calendars.
  • Tasks with no actual work move: their start and due dates shift by that many working days. Durations, links and lags are not touched.
  • Tasks that have started stay: a task with an actual start, any progress, or marked Done keeps its dates. So does a task whose dates come from a linked Microsoft Planner plan.
  • Tasks linked after a task that stayed are rescheduled from their links, as they would be after any change. With automatic scheduling off, they are not, and the dialog says so.
  • Constraint dates move with their task. Deadlines move only with Move deadlines too.
  • Parent tasks move with their subtasks, or take the span of their subtasks when some moved and some stayed.
  • The project’s start and end dates move by the same number of working days.

Anyone who may edit the project, which is its owner and its managers unless your organization changed the roles. The item is not offered on an archived project. Move project is on every plan.

A connected AI assistant can do the same with the move_project tool, and can preview the counts first without changing anything.

Does it change my baselines? No. Baselines keep what they recorded, so after a move the Baseline view shows how far the plan moved from them. Capture a new baseline if the new dates are the ones you are committing to. See Capture and compare baselines.

Why did some tasks not move? They have started, are done, or take their dates from Planner. The dialog counts them before you move and after.

Can I move a file in Onplana Schedule the same way? Yes, with Plan > Move project…. See Move a whole plan to a new start date.
